Product details
The Rollerblade Maxxum Edge skates are made for those who seek high end fitness skates. But not just regular fitness skates – ones that will withstand whatever you throw at them, intense workout schedule and rigour, a type of skating that pushes both user and equipment to their limits, no matter the environment: road, track or urban. In fact, Maxxum Edge are much closer to concept of “freeskates on steroids” when it comes to durability, fit, support and rigidity, than to your regular fitness models.
It doesn’t come as surprise when you consider that these have the very same shell which Rollerblade Twister Edge uses. This is where similarities end, though – Maxxum Edge have different cuffs, liners, buckles and frames.
The boot itself is stiffer and gives much better ankle support than old Rollerblade Maxxum, which shared the boot with original Twisters (ones with shell full of holes!). Cuff has been shaped to give anatomically correct fit. Furthermore, Rollerblade equipped the boot with metal plates embedded in frame mounting points. As a result, the connection is super solid and give you much better energy transfer. This effect is amplified by Anti Torsion Box, which is a hole underneath central part of the foot, framed with 3D structure, giving the whole shell more rigidity. The shell also accommodates a shock absorber under the heel, giving a bit of relief for your joints by reducing the amount of vibration they are exposed to.
Inside the shell resides a High Performance liner, made from high quality materials. It has been designed to lock the heel in place and provide high level of comfort. It comes with a good insole with arch support. A slimmer cuff than in case of Twister Edge still provides excellent support, but come with bigger V-cut for a better range of ankle movement.
Boot closure is made of lacing and two strong buckles, made for Maxxum Edge skates from scratch. We can say without a shadow of doubt that lower buckle is the most solid one ever made for skates – the heel lock it gives is exceptional. The buckle on cuff is also well-made and strong, providing excellent support when locked.
Maxxum Edge 90 have durable, extruded frame of 280 mm length. It is very rigid – do not let the fact that it uses two piece axles fool you (on a side note – thanks to smart design, only one allen key is required to tighten the axles). The quality of this frame easily dwarfs some frames currently used in freeskates! Thanks to its length and rigidity, as well as strong connection with the boot, the base for push is super solid. Coupled with four 90 mm wheels, it makes these skates very fast. Still, Maxxum Edge 90 offer a good level of agility and acceleration, making them practical for urban use.
The stock wheels are Rollerblade Supreme, a medium tier offering dedicated for fitness and urban skating. Their urethane compound have a good level of grip and wears down slowly, making these long lasting. ILQ-7 Plus bearings made by a world-famous Twincam company complete the package and deliver smooth, fast roll.
We recommend these skates not only for people who look for “hardcore workout” gear, but also those who would want a faster, but still low to the ground Twister Edge skates (the 3x110 mm frames found in Twister Edge 3WD are noticeably higher). These skates will perform great in both urban environment and on the road or track. It is worth to note that Maxxum Edge 90 have become a favourite skates of skiers who ride for Nordica (Rollerblade and Nordica are both part of the same sports gear corporation, Tecnicaa Group). Rollerblade has been promoting their skates to skiers for off-season training in “Skate to Ski” initiative, aimed to spread awareness of benefits which skating can give such athletes. Maxxum Edge 90 won their hearts thanks to great fit, excellent level of support and perfect balance between agility, speed and stability.
About manufacturer
Rollerblade are industry’s veterans and one of the most important brands in inline skating history. The company was founded in year 1982 by Brennan Olson and Scott Olson, in Minnesota. Since then, Rollerblade underwent several acquisitions and finally became a part of Tecnica Group, a corporation which gathers several well-known and highly valued sport brands under its umbrella.
Contrary to popular belief, Rollerblade was not the first company to mass-manufacture inline skates. However, they were the first company to sell them worldwide and invest heavily in promotion of the rising sport. A testament of their success is the fact that we now use “rollerblading”, a word derived from company’s name, as a synonym to inline skating. Inline skates themselves are often called “rollerblades” or in shortened form, “blades”.
In this day and age, Rollerblade stands for quality. They are not the most innovative of the brands, their catalogue is not as expansive as some others, but without a shadow of doubt – a product with Rollerblade logo on it, is a quality one - from the simplest recreational skates to high end speedskating boots. Company’s approach can be described as steady evolution rather than revolution – this may not appeal to some customers, but guarantees that RB’s skates are always a safe bet. It’s worth remembering that Rollerblade do have resources to give us a surprise from time to time – being in one family with winter sports giants like Nordica, Tecnica and Blizzard Sports gives them an opportunity for technology transfer.
Even though Rollerblade prefers quality over quantity, they offer skates for almost every style: from kid’s skates, through recreational, fitness, speed and aggressive to urban skates. The only area where their catalogue is lacking is freestyle slalom; Rollerblade, to this day, has not created a model dedicated for this type of activity, even though their older urban skate, Twister, was a very popular choice among beginners and intermediate slalom enthusiasts at the beginning of the century.
Rollerblade have always worked with skaters and attracted best of them. There was a time when their aggressive inline skating team was unmatched – the very first pro skate of one of most talented and highest regarded skaters in history, Alexander Broskow, was made by Rollerblade. They were the first company to release a pro-model of an urban skate with Fusion 84 Greg Mirzoyan. It’s worth mentioning names like Ben Brillante, Sven Boekhorst, Robert Guerrero, Vincent Vuvankha and Danny Alridge – all skate or skated for Rollerblade. Moreover, the company is trying to make ambassadors of skating out of people who practice other sports – we can mention a loose cooperation with skiing superstar, Sierra Quitiquit. The company also tries to appeal to skiing audience in particular by their campaign and training program called “Skate to ski”.
