Product Description

The USD brand is one of pillars of aggressive inline skating worldwide and have created many iconic, excellent skates over the years. Their latest smash hit is Aeon – a skate which was voted a product of the year in One Blade Awards in year 2016 when it first came out. USD is back for season 2021 and goes in with multiple Aeon models, in different configurations and with brand-new parts. Aeons are better than ever and Aeon 60 XXI is the premium, flagship skate equipped in best parts and can go toe to toe with pro-skates.

Aeons are based around unibody concept – the shell, soulplates and frame are one moulded piece. This may seem like a step back compared to interchangeable wheels and souls, but this unique approach brings many benefits. First, even though Aeons are composite shell skates, they are one of the lightest on the market. Secondly, the unibody solution means that there are no screws, t-nuts and washers to mount the frame and soulplate – you don’t have to worry about lost hardware, damaged frame bolts and so on, any more! Last but not least – the energy transfer and movement precision is simply superb, making for fast and snappy skating experience.

The Aeon shell is highly resistant thanks to material used: the glass fibre reinforced plastic. It gives the skate boot adequate rigidity and slides well on ledges and rails. Aeon 60 XXI comes with skinned upper, which is not merely an aesthetic choice. It makes the skate boot more enclosed and wraps around the foot, making lacing more efficient. The heel is held in place with a Velcro strap.

The liner used in Aeons is MyFit Skinny Boy model. It can be laced and has been designed to give the best fit in slim profile Aeon sheel. Inned boot can be even heat-moulded to achieve customized fit! Inside the liner resides EVA insole with arch support. MyFit 2nd Skin is dual fit, meaning that front of the liner covers two sizes thanks to stretchy neoprene toe area. The skates come with new, thicker shock absorber to better dampen vibrations and protect your heels during landings.

A big change introduced in new Aeon models, including the 60 XXI version, is entirely new cuff. Old cuff was always divisive – some people were praising it, but there was also a notable portion of the community criticizing it. New part should satisfy the majority of skaters. It cannot be hidden that new cuff is inspired by cult classic Salomon ST skate – one which is no longer in production for well over 15 years. The part is enclosed at the front with overlapping „wings” underneath the buckle strap and have „cuts” designed to improve flex on tricks. It even comes with a canting system that allows you to place it higher for more support or even to counter pronation or suppination issues with ankles!

One of the key reasons why Aeons are so popular is their ready to roll nature – they are perfect flat setup out of the box. There’s no UFS frame mounting, so there are no limitations of it – this means that the frame can be low as possible, as well as distance between wheels in each pair: 1st and 2nd / 3rd and 4th can be super short. Thanks to this design, the frame groove is very wide and generous – you don’t have to worry about wheel bite at all. The soulplates are also well-designed and have the same width from front to back, making locking on tricks easier. Because your feet are so close to grinded surface and not separated by centimetres of plastic, the physical feedback is so much better. The frame takes up to 61 mm wheels.

Speaking about wheels – we have said before that Aeons 60 XXI are premium skates and this rings true for the wheels, too. USD was not holding anything back and stock wheels are Undercover Apex – top tier ones with aluminium cores, which gives them exceptional roll and makes skating on them super precise and dynamic. Aeon 60 XXI comes with 60 mm, 88A hardness variant of the wheel. Urethane compound is characterized by ultra-high rebound and high level of grip. Wheels have elliptical profile for more speed and to reduce possibility of wheel bite even further. Apex are one of the fastest (if not the fastest) wheels for aggressive skating on the market and have been created for riding in skateparks. These are the very best wheels made by Undercover.

But wheels won’t spin by themselves. Luckily, USD has not let us down in bearings department either, giving the skates Wicked ABEC9 chrome steel bearings. These are fast and durable, perfect to use Apex wheels to their full potential.

Aeon 60 XXI are not only one of the best editions of this revolutionary skate — they are one of the best aggressive skates currently on the market, too. There are no budget cuts, no compromises or trade-offs here – everything is a top class.

Every aggressive inline skating fan should know USD brand. German company Powerslide, one of the biggest inline skates manufacturers in the world, introduced USD back in 1997, under UpSideDown label to begin with. The name was a little nod towards tricks naming convention but primarily reflected the intention of turning the industry upside down – introducing fresh ideas, offering innovative products and wide compatibility with parts without need to use power tools (which was rather uncommon back then).

USD was a great success – the company has hit the ground running, quickly attracting aggressive skating legends like Shane Coburn and Arlo Eisenberg. Other skaters have followed and soon legends like Jon Julio, Josh Petty, Dustin Latimer, Champion Baumstimler and Kevin Gillan have joined the team. It was basically a pantheon of pro-riders back then, unmatched by any other skating brand team before or after.

In 1998 the brand was renamed to Universal Skate Design, further putting pressure on the main goal of USD – providing great products for wide group of skaters. Even though the very first skates made by USD were not that good (USD Damocles), the company has landed their first mega hit with Throne Classic the same year. These legendary skates were in production for over 15 years and even though they are not being made any more, they still have a lot of fans to this day. It was the first boot ever designed with customisation in mind – allowing to easily change frames (even for ones made by other brands like 50/50 and Senate), soulplates and other parts.

Few years later, USD joined an industry wide project to develop UFS – universal frame system, a skate frame mounting standard allowing for simple exchange of frames. It is used in skates to this day and serves as an example of what can be achieved if big industry players are willing to cooperate. Of course, the brand has not stopped innovation and constantly introduced new skates, parts and pushed for growth of the sport. In year 2000 they have released a video with profiles of USD team riders – now legendary COUP de TAT, one of the most important, if not the most important, videos in history of aggressive scene. Another milestone came in year 2010, when another brand by Powerslide – Deshi – was disbanded and USD overtook and polished their best skate, resulting in release of Carbon II, undoubtedly the most popular carbon-based aggressive skate ever. The design of this boot has proven so good that other companies have started to copy it. Five years later and USD drops another megaton bomb – the Aeon skates, first ever to feature unibody construction, where shell, soulplates and frame are single moulded piece. This resulted in a super light and responsive hardboot, unlike any other released before.

There’s no denying that aggressive inline skating is not as popular as in 90s, but there are still several core brands on the market, offering solid products. However, while others focus on two or three skate models and target medium or upper price bracket, USD tries to offer variety both in terms of price and products. If you need solid, complete skates to start on, USD delivers. If you are after high end, lightweight boot made out of carbon, they have those too. Something innovative, different maybe? USD won’t let you down. This variety is something other companies simply do not match.
