Wicked Titanium 8 balls are new addition to brand’s line-up. They have been created for skaters who value durability and speed. To put it simply, these bearings are most likely the best ones you can get without investing into ceramic ones. They use 8 balls and the philosophy behind it is that more balls distribute load more evenly, allowing for smoother roll.
In addition, even though both rings and balls are made of chrome steel, they have been coated in protective layer of TiN (titanium nitride). This chemical compound is really hard and falls under ceramic materials category. It plays multiple roles here.
First of all, TiN coating does excellent job at preventing corrosion, making bearings much less likely to rust in comparison to “naked” steel ones.
High hardness also means that bearing elements are more resistant to damage from accumulated dirt – these are less likely to get scratched, which negatively impacts performance.
Last thing to mention is friction. Two surfaces coated in TiN have much lower friction against each other than ones made out of naked chrome steel do. Thus, bearings are faster, lose speed at slower rate and ride is smoother overall.
