Product details
The Bones Bearings brand was established in early 80’s by George Powell, a skateboarder who realized the limitations of skating equipment available at a time and wanted to push beyond them. His search for faster and stronger bearings that wouldn’t cost an arm and leg led him to a cooperation with factory in Switzerland which was making higher spec and faster bearings than anything on the skating market. They worked to create a bearing that would be ideal for skateboarders and made a huge impact when their first line of products released. The bearings turned out to be so good that rollerskaters have started to pick them up. Naturally, when inline skates arrived on the scene the brand expanded to this market, too.
Bones Bearings are so good, because they are result of decades of experience in the field and are made specifically for skating. No matter what kind of wheeled device you have attached to/under your feet, you cannot go wrong with Bones.
One can say that there are two main lines of Bones Bearings: Swiss and REDS. Swiss are, as name suggests, made in Switzerland, in the same factory as the very first Bones. These are top tier products in their categories, but cheaper REDS are not far behind them, even though their production has been moved to China. There is no such thing as bad Bones Bearings model.
Bones Swiss 608 are the bearings that started it all. They are the reference point to which every other bearing in Bones line is compared to, and for many people they serve as such when evaluating the quality of other brands. They are manufactured in Switzerland with high precision and undergo a strict inspection process. Since 1981, they are serving professionals worldwide as competition grade bearings. Their durability makes them last several times longer than regular ABEC rated bearings. Won’t let you down no matter what style of skating you prefer.
About manufacturer
Bones Bearings is a company founded by one of the most influential skateboarders in history, George Powell. Back when he started, there wasn’t really much of quality equipment for skateboarding on the US market. When George lost his job, he decided to focus on his hobby and make it his main source of income. He quickly started to innovate, introducing better urethane wheels, stronger built decks and trucks. Soon, George teamed up with another skateboarding legend, Stacy Peralta and together they’ve founded Powell Peralta brand.
After gaining a foothold and making himself a name in skateboarding industry, George turned his eye to bearings, as he felt that none of the options available on the market was good enough for skateboarding – even if the quality was there, they were still too slow. He started hunting for a factory that can make better bearings and this search led him to Switzerland, where he found a small company making custom bearings. Working with them, he created Bones brand and made some revolutionary changes to skate bearing design: plastic ball retainer instead of stamped metal one, only one side closed and finally, adjusted the clearances and tolerances to make them better suited to side and vertical loads. In addition, the brand developed their own lubricant formula, the Bones Speed Cream.
Bones Swiss made bearings quickly became industry’s gold standard, but their price was and still is, significant. This is why George struck a partnership with a factory in China and made Bones REDS bearings, which offer unmatched quality at affordable price. Using Swiss bearings specification and design, he and his Chinese partners came amazingly close to quality offered by original product at less than half the price. These aren’t simply machine/electric motor bearings made in China and branded with Bones logo, something a lot of companies would opt for, they are proper custom design the brand is famous for.
Bones bearings are so good that they quickly got picked up by athletes in other sports. Inline skating, rollerskating and scooter scenes embraced them and nowadays, they are one of the top picks for fans of these sports.
