Do you miss old style Powerslide Hardcore Evo with 165 mm frame mounting? Or maybe you’ve always wanted for German brand to not hold back and make them the very best freestyle skate out there? Do you skate a lot of technical tricks and absolutely need superior support for your ankles? Or maybe you already have your favourite pair of 165 mm frames and seek best boot to couple them with?
If you have answered “yes” to any of the above, we have great news for you. New model from IQON brand, called CL 10, will easily surpass your expectations.
Yes, these skates are very similar to HC Evo we all know and love – however, they are not made for Trinity mounting system like current versions of Powerslide’s iconic model, but rather use classic 165 mm spacing. In fact, they almost look like coming from alternative timeline, where Powerslide would never invent Trinity and would develop Hardcore Evo further using old standard. The inspiration is obvious, but why shouldn’t it be? After all, both Powerslide and IQON have the same owner. The difference is that while Powerslide is mainstream brand, carefully balancing value of their skates in terms of price to quality relationship, IQON doesn’t have to bother with that – they go for the best, no matter the price.
Thus, CL 10 share the general plan of older HC Evo, but bring improvements in every area you can think of.
Lets’ start with boot base. It is made out of compressed carbon and Kevlar weave. This technological process is far more advanced than one used for regular carbon boots. The pre-preg material is inserted into metal molds and shaped by high pressure. As a result, the structure of such shell can be more complex without creating unwanted air pockets between layers. Every pair of shells is inspected with X-rays scan to make sure they are of desirable quality and given serial number to prove their authenticity. They are heat-moldable allowing you to achieve perfect fit and comfort.
Skates come with carbon cuff – such element has never found its’ way into Hardcore Evo or any other Powerslide skate! Great news for people who skate or want to learn difficult, technical tricks in freestyle slalom, but slide and downhill enthusiasts will see major benefits all the same.
Integrated boot padding is made out of high quality foams which are heat-moldable too. They are covered in microbfiber material, which is super soft, breathable and resistant. Outer skin doesn’t disappoint either – made out of ballistic nylon and reinforced with artificial leather, it will withstand a lot of abuse.
Skates come with many nice to have additions. The 45 degree buckle is resembling ones used in speedskates – it distributes pressure more evenly than simple plastic straps and allows you to pull it to the sides easily, so you can lace your boot without it getting in the way. Secondly, the boot comes with two pairs of additional lace loops in front part of the boot, allowing you to tighten this area more – once again something freestyle slalom skaters should find super useful.
The side protector is 3D printed and furthermore, IQON provides blueprints for it free of charge in .stl format, so you can print replacements by yourself! Choice of colour and filament material is up to you.
Last but not least, there is an option for longitudinal frame position adjustment. Thanks to it, you do not have to worry if you 165 mm mount spacing frame of choice will sit centred under the boot.
To sum it up – IQON CL 10 is one of the best freestyle/freeskate boots created in history. It is a top tier gear which should satisfy the needs of every skater.
About manufacturer
The IQON brand, a part of Disroyal company, is a new, strong player in the market of skates, frames, wheels and bearings. IQON puts quality first: they make only premium products. But that’s not all – German brand does not hesitate to introduce ideas once deemed too crazy to went into production.
For example, Decode frames lack bearing bosses (spacers) in between frame walls and bearings. This allows designers to place axles wherever they want. The trade-off is that these frames require dedicated, proprietary Decode bearings, however, their versatility is simply unmatched. Even the shortest version allows for four different wheel setups, some of which can be both flat or rockered.
What would you say about having environmentally friendly wheels? Apart from classic IQON line of wheels, the brand also offers ones made out of recycled materials and with addition of cornstarch to reduce amount of oil-derived polyurethane. Apart from that, company makes high quality skates, both urban and aggressive.
It is worth to note that Disroyal has been founded by Matthias Knoll, one of Powerslide owners. He gathered a team of some most talented people in blading to create a truly exceptional brand. IQON itself is attracting more and more skaters – the first big name in the sport to make a jump across was Montre Livingston, who switched teams after years of cooperation with USD brand.
