Warning – the frames come without Decode bearings, which you need to purchase separately.
If you haven’t heard about IQON brand yet, it’s a nigh time to get yourself familiar with it! The company is revolutionizing urban and street skating in front of our very own eyes, bringing fresh ideas and excellent execution.
All IQON Decode frames are made out of top-end 7003 series aircraft aluminum – a material rarely used in freeskating frames, where 6061 series alloy is more common. Truth to be told, 7003 series is most often found in best in class speedskating frames, where superb rigidity allows for decreased weight using a very minimalist design. Here, though, we have mostly solid walls, as weight is not a concern – this results in unbelievably strong frames.
Another thing about Decode line of frames is sheer variety of products. There are three different lengths to choose from, coming in three different frame mounting versions and every frame is available in at least two colour variants. Furthermore, no matter which one you pick, it allows you to use multiple wheel configurations.
The last thing noted is above is the “killer feature” which elevates Decode frames above competition. Up to this point, designers were limited by walls geometry when working on a new frame. To get around this, Decode frames walls are completely flat on the inner surface. If you wonder what about bearings bosses – there are none. Frames are meant to be used with Decode bearings. The inner bearing ring is extended to act as a spacer.
This is important: if you want to use Decode frames, you absolutely MUST get a set of Decode bearings!
With built-in bearing bosses out of the way, designers didn’t need to worry about wheel urethane rubbing against them and were free to place axles anywhere they wanted. This gives us many options of wheel setups in a single frame.
Decode Pro 110 is a full-fat wizard/flowskating frame and excellent choice for 3x125 mm setup, too. By far, this one is richest in options out of all three versions. Here they are:
- 4x110 flat setup or with 1 mm banana rockering. The axles spacing is 335 mm.
- 3x125 flat setup or with 1 mm rockering and second wheel in central position. 296 mm axles spacing.
- 3x125 flat setup with second wheel placed more to the back. 296 mm axles spacing.
- 84-80-80-80-84 with 1 mm “banana” rockering. Axles spacing is 335 mm.
- 84-80-80-80-84 with 2 mm “V” rockering. Axles spacing is 335 mm.
- 110-90-90-110 flat setup or with 1 mm banana rockering. The axles spacing is 335 mm. This setup uses H-block (available separately) and allows you to perform grinds.
The AG version is made for skates with UFS mounting, so aggressive inline models, mostly.
Full set of necessary hardware included alongside specs sheet explaining possible wheel configurations. Grindblock available separately (M size for Decode 80 and 90 frames, size L for Decode 110).
About manufacturer
The IQON brand, a part of Disroyal company, is a new, strong player in the market of skates, frames, wheels and bearings. IQON puts quality first: they make only premium products. But that’s not all – German brand does not hesitate to introduce ideas once deemed too crazy to went into production.
For example, Decode frames lack bearing bosses (spacers) in between frame walls and bearings. This allows designers to place axles wherever they want. The trade-off is that these frames require dedicated, proprietary Decode bearings, however, their versatility is simply unmatched. Even the shortest version allows for four different wheel setups, some of which can be both flat or rockered.
What would you say about having environmentally friendly wheels? Apart from classic IQON line of wheels, the brand also offers ones made out of recycled materials and with addition of cornstarch to reduce amount of oil-derived polyurethane. Apart from that, company makes high quality skates, both urban and aggressive.
It is worth to note that Disroyal has been founded by Matthias Knoll, one of Powerslide owners. He gathered a team of some most talented people in blading to create a truly exceptional brand. IQON itself is attracting more and more skaters – the first big name in the sport to make a jump across was Montre Livingston, who switched teams after years of cooperation with USD brand.
