Product details
After years of skating, filming skating and recording podcasts about skating, the Canadian Mushroom Blading duo finally took another logical step – they have founded a company and make skating related products.
Joey and Todd skate an interesting mix of aggressive and freestyle, they are also one of the pioneers in realm of Wizard skating. But before they have started to do magic on frames from Leon Basin, they had a period of rediscovering wheels bigger than what aggressive skaters use most of the time. Their fascination with “big wheels” led them to film BIG WHEELS and BIG WHEELS 2, in which they have explored options granted by 4x80 mm setup freeskates. This size of wheels is nothing to write home about for freeskaters, but from point of view of someone who spent most of their life skating on sub-60 mm diameter wheels, they can indeed feel enormous. We bet that MB guys look at things very different now, considering that they are no strangers to riding 110 mm wheels.
80 mm wheels remain the most versatile size in history of inline skating (and we are ready to die defending this hill), so of course they have found their place among models offered by Mushroom Blading brand. MB Scribbles aren’t your regular freeskating wheels, though. They have a mostly round profile, which is just a little bit elliptical. Not by much, but enough to make a difference when you put a fresh set of wheels into frames. Urethane is grippy, but hard: 87A. Most freeskating wheels of this size use hardness between 84A and 86A. Core isn’t anything revolutionary, but it is a proven design, so nothing to complain about here.
These are great pick for urban skating, downhill, 5-wheeled Wizard and Wizard-like frames or even USD Aeon 80. If you want to use them in antirocker setup thanks to modded soulplates and frames, go ahead.
MB Scribbles are good quality, versatile wheels. Another reason to pick them is knowledge that you money goes to one of the most inventive skaters in North America (or maybe even whole world).
About manufacturer
Mushroom Blading is an example of a fun project which became a brand. Two friends forming the company have been skating together for 30 years now and come from aggressive inline background – however, they never took skating too seriously and eluded a simple styles classification. It is fair to say that no other skaters were recipients of so many praise and mockery simultaneously through the years. Joey McGarry and Todd McInerney do not care what other think about their skating – their simply love doing what their do and to constantly experiment.
Furthermore, they love capturing their skating on film. Their edits and short clips released through the years are countless. The first longer production is Allusion, composed of material filmed back in 1997 and 1998. When it comes to breakthrough movie, which put Mushroom Blading on international skating map, the opinions are divided. Some say that it was “Cirque Duh Sol Eh?” from 2004, others point towards “Better than baseball” from 2006. “Mushroom Blading vol.1”, released in 2008 is also a strong contender to the title.
The Mushroom Blading duo have collaborated with many different inline skating brands through the year, both in official and semi-official ways. The undoubtedly most prestige of such project were Pro wheels of 100 mm diameter made by Undercover. Guys have picked it up from there and created their very own wheel brand, delivering models dedicated for both freeskating (broadly speaking) and aggressive inline. Also, if you look for some cool clothes with unique designs, Mushroom Blading sells softgoods with unique graphics hand-drawn by Todd.
