Product details
We honestly doubt if Powerslide Imperial need any introduction or recommendation to urban skating fans. These skates are present in German brand catalogue for a decade, after all. Even though they are no longer the flagship model, being in a shadow of younger Next and Zoom, they still are super solid option for freeskating and even for people who want to get in to freestyle slalom without dropping a lot of money on carbon boots.
For dedicated fans of the skate, Powerslide has prepared something extra – the Imperial Special Edition. This skate comes with AL Spider frame – these were used widely in Powerslide freeskates until 165 mm mounting models took a back-seat in relation to new Trinity equipped skates. For last few years, Imperials were coming only with basic, casted Gamma frames. In a way, Special Edition is like a tribute to days when these skates were the premium option in Powerslide’s line-up.
The Imperial design may be ten years old, but it has not aged a bit. The bold, futuristic lines are still eye-catching and good looking. Imperial shell is made out of glass fibre reinforced plastic, which makes it extremely resistant, durable and supportive. These skates are made for demanding urban action: jumps, slides, fast skating. Their exceptional rigidity and level of support also makes them a great choice for big wheels and indeed, they are pretty popular option among skaters who like to built their own, custom setups.
Another feature that made Imperials so iconic and popular is the X-Slot frame mounting. The boot uses 165 mount spacing with raised heel (ssm, v-type) like many other freeskates out there, but comes with a fluent way to adjust the frame position. The mounting points are placed in rails in the middle of metal plates embedded in the boot underside, allowing for precise front to back frame position adjustment. Meanwhile, elongated bolt slots in the frame let you to adjust its’ position to the sides. You can fine-tune the skates to work better with your anatomy and skating technique, not to mention the fact that thanks to X-Slot system, compatibility with ssm mounting frames is excellent. Last but not least, the before-mentioned metal plates increase energy transfer efficiency, resulting in a faster and more responsive skates than if the frame would simply be mounted on plastic.
Inside the shell you’ll find a comfortable MyFit Basic dual fit liner. It is a dual-sized liner, meaning that sizing corresponds to the shell sizing (i.e. EU41-42) – the stretchy toe made out of neoprene allows it to adjust to user’s foot size. Anatomically shaped foams give high level of comfort. The boot closure consists of lacing and two strong buckles, locking the heel in place. Replaceable slider protects the shell in area most prone to damage during falls and on slides.
Imperial Special Edition come with extruded aluminium frame, made out of 6061 aircraft aluminium alloy. This particular model is called Spider and looks super stylish, have low weight and high level of durability and rigidity. To put it simply, it is a higher tier frame than Gamma model used in current Imperial One models. It does have a different length in relation to a boot size, too!
- Sizes EU37/38 and EU39/40 have 231 mm flat frame with 4x76 mm wheels.
- Sizes including and bigger than EU41/42 come with 243 mm flat frame and 4x80 setup.
If you are looking for a good, versatile skate for urban skating – you cannot go wrong with flat setup. This version comes with Spinner wheels – these Powerslide classics have strong core and plenty of urethane on them – as far as mid-tier wheels go, they are one of the best available. Chrome steel ABEC5 grade bearings complete the package.
Imperial may no longer be the top dog in Powerslide’s urban skates catalogue, but they are still a great choice for urban skating. The boot is excellent: supportive, strong and have one of best frame mounting solutions among freeskates equipped with 165 mm mount spacing. Furthermore, spare parts are widely available, thanks to the fact Imperials are on the market for so long. Their design was ahead of its time and remains relevant all these years later, allowing them to go toe to toe with more recent skates, both by Powerslide and the competition.
About manufacturer
Powerslide is one of industry’s leaders even though it is relatively young company – it has been founded in year 1994. The Germany based brand has entered the market at height of inline skating’s popularity, at the time when market was flooded with low quality skates which could be described as toys rather than sport equipment. From the very beginning, Powerslide had one goal: to break the perception of inline skating being a leisure activity for kids and to promote it as a sport for everyone. That’s not a surprise considering that company’s owner, Matthias Knoll, is a skater himself. As speedskating contender, he breathes this sport and his love for it has been fuelling Powerslide for over 25 years.
If we were to describe Powerslide in three words, these would be: quality, variety and innovation. From the very beginning of company’s existence, Germans have challenged industry’s giants and competed with them in field of quality. Nowadays they are in lead of the pack when it comes to technology: heatmoldable liners and boots, compressed carbon shells, revolutionary Trinity mounting – these things are relatively fresh and competition is yet to respond. Looking back, Powerslide was the first company to introduce carbon freestyle skate with integrated padding. They were the first company to introduce carbon based aggressive skate. 125mm wheels were introduced to speedskating thanks to them. The introduction of Kizer Advance frame and then Level 2 made a big impact and lead to rapid evolution of aggressive flat frames. Germans were the first company to make triskates a significant part of their offering, starting a new trend. Nowadays, Powerslide are the only company that makes real off-road skates (not to be confused with off-road rollerskis).
This pursuit of change and improvement is unique – no other company in this industry is having a boss willing to take even the craziest of ideas and concepts to production stage. Powerslide also have, without a shadow of doubt, the richest catalogue of products among all skating companies; covering even the most niche equipment made for freestyle slalom, downhill and inline alpine. They have full range of accessories and parts: helmets, protection pads, wheels, bearings, frames and so on. The company is also making rollerskates, providing recreational, roller derby and skatepark models and equipment. It can be safely said that if Powerslide is not making something skating related, chances of other companies having it in their offer are slim to none.
Powerslide have an impressive brand portfolio: MyFit liners, Wicked bearings, Reign hockey skates, USD aggressive skates, Kizer frames, Undercover wheels, Matter wheels, Gawds boots, wheels and softgoods, Prime wheels, Juice rollerskates wheels, Chaya rollerskates, Ennui protection and many others.
What makes Powerslide special are company’s people and supporters who create a community around it. Germans support and cooperate with skaters all around the globe. International Powerslide Team is composed of names every inline skating fan should be familiar with and believe us - there are far too many to list them here.
