Product details
WKND Skateboards is an independent skateboard company based in Los Angeles, California. Considered as a leader within the smaller skate brand resurgence, re-igniting the fun side of skateboarding with an abundance of brand personality, style and comic presence online. The company is the brainchild of skateboarder and videographer Grant Yansura, who has described the brand as a bi-polar skateboard company, an outlet for their fun and silly ideas. In one video you'll find a funny parody and the next it's something more serious and artistic. Utilizing the creative energy behind the brand, Yansura and the boys have dropped some well-crafted apparel and hardware.
Lately the WKND crew has been hanging out a lot with Jon Julio and Themskates team and as a result these two groups of individuals are coming up with the historical collaboration that got the attention of the whole rollerblading and skateboarding industries. The very first inline skates produced by a skateboard company? Yes! WKND x Them collaboration somehow marks the end of some era and establishes a solid foundation for the future generations, the future without divisions and limits!
Coming in bright orange colour, Themskates 909 x WKND offers a slim, ergonomic shell with a slightly raised heel. Slightly longer and wider than the original shell of Themskaets 908 with the updated plastic. Harder and stronger to provide extra support and longer life.
Themskates 909 x WKND cuffs with the adjustable position option additionally help in customizing the skate to own needs (the High position — more support, useful for setups with large wheels or the Low position — better flex, typically for aggressive skating). The cuff also features unique Themskates buckle with an engraved logo and WKND dog graphics at the back.
The skates come stock with the improved version of Themskates soul plate, marked as v.3 where the width of the heel area has been significantly increased. In addition, the so-called “Bridge Hardware” has been introduced, thanks to which we can easily unscrew / replace the soul kit if necessary. Just like any skateboard deck the unique WKND soul plate is also decorated with the matching drawings. The idea that is quickly catching on with other skate manufacturers.
A successive update is also the fourth version (V4) of Themskates liner. The heel position has been shifted a bit “back” for greater stiffness. Wider tongue with more padding for shell filling and even more comfort. Additional reinforcement in the cuff area and a neoprene, stretchable toe finish.
To complete the setup Themskates 909 skates are offered with Themskates Street frames, designed by Kyle Sola. Frames made of injection-molded nylon filled with glass fibre. Shallow and small groove are great for both flat and anti-rocker setups. Screws with an asymmetric “head” where tightening requires only one Alan key. The maximum wheel size in the flat setting is 58 mm, but thanks to the special sole cut-outs, the anti-rocker setting can fit outer wheel sizes up to 60 mm.
Themskates 58 mm wheels of universal 90a hardness can be recommended for any type of surface — good grip on smooth, concrete skateparks and a longer life during more rough street skating.
About manufacturer
Them Skates is a brand created by aggressive inline skating legend, Jon Julio. He is the mastermind behind the marketing and team management of (now shelved) Valo brand which he ran for Roces. After over 15 years, Valo came to an end and he and Italian brand parted ways. Seeing that he basically lost a job that he dedicated his whole adult life to, Jon was at the crossroads. Led by responsibility towards his family, he almost took post office job. However, it was not meant to be – following his love for skating, he decided to have one last shot at creating a skating company, seeing that the he already has been involved in Themgoods (a softgoods company) and Youth frames projects, which were more of a side-jobs for him. Them Skates were born.
Even though the first product – Them 908 model – was nothing revolutionary: used old Sabotage molds (with a new soulplate, but still), had very basic liner and was available as boot only without an option for complete setup, it sold like a hotcakes. This success is thanks to Jon’s loyal fans and supporters from all over the world, a community that had his back and wanted him in the skating. The popularity of Them Skates allowed Jon to expand rapidly – within a time frame of just one year, he developed his proprietary boot mold in cooperation with Kyle Sola, one of the most prominent industrial designers in skating. The 909, as it is called, is notable for being the first boot mold created and fully owned by a company run solely by aggressive inline skaters. Soon, the company created their own frames. Nowadays, one of the most talented and influential skaters are associated with Them Skates and many more chose to ride their boots for what they represent for aggressive skating community as a whole.
