Product details
Do you know Nick Lomax? If you are even remotely interested in freeskating and aggressive, you should. Nick, a resident of Barcelona and a good friend of many of the best skaters in the world is no pushover himself. He is incredibly talented, skilled and has been a pro rider for USD for years now, having numerous pro aggressive skates. This season, he has been given an opportunity to have a signature freeskate of his own, with Powerslide.
That’s right – you read that correctly. The first ever pro freeskate from Powerslide goes to Nick! Hard to believe that a brand so influential in this field of skating has never released a pro skate of this kind, right?
Nick chose the Zoom skate as a base for his pro model for a very simple reason. To quote the man himself:
"The Zoom was an easy decision for me because the skate fits me like a glove. I chose a fast and agile 3x110mm setup and the super light Ego SL rail as well as bearings from Wicked because there is nothing I love more than flying through my city as fast as possible. Many thanks to Powerslide and all my supporters for this opportunity!"
What we’ve got is the very best Zoom edition yet, even surpassing the Zoom Rental, which were already significantly upgraded in comparison to a standard Zoom Pro skates. Yes, Nick went for the cheaper Trinity hardboot of the two available in Powerslide catalog, but his model is as far removed from budget balance restrictions applied in case of standard Zoom Pro skates as possible.
The shell has been given a nice dark blue colour, making it standing out from the crowd – not many skates use similar shades. It is a supportive boot with generous fit – snug enough in the heel area to give you a good level of control, but spacious enough in the front part to work well for people with wider feet. Of course, the skate uses Trinity adapter mounted securely to the underside of the boot, acting as a middle piece between the frame and the boot. Even though Zoom are not moulded to accommodate Trinity mounting right out of the gate like Next are, the adapter works well enough and brings you all the benefits of Powerslide’s proprietary mounting system: increased energy transfer, better stability and control, improved vibration dampening and lower center of balance. As expected from freeskate – the boot is fully laced and pretty high too, plus comes equipped with two buckles. The spot most vulnerable to damage during falls and slides is protected by a slider.
Inside the boot you’ll find a MyFit 2nd Skin liner. It is simply one of the best liners on the market right now, with medium to high level of support. It gives super snug fit thanks to anatomically shaped foams, pre-shaped tongue and lacing in upper part. It also offers heat-moldable heel area to lock your foot in place even better. 2nd Skin liner comes with optional, external “cross” reinforcement made out of EVA foam on the back, which you can keep or take off to fill out the shell more or less.
Underneath the boot resides lightweight and rigid EGO SL frame. It is an extruded and CNC machined frame made out of 6000 series aluminum, one of the best in Powerslide’s catalog. Frame measures 243 mm which is a good choice for urban skating and fits three 110 mm diameter wheels. Nick went for this size because it is super fast while still offering trick possibilities. Of course, seeing that this is a Trinity system equipped skate, you can put any frame you want under this boot in the future and even use the stock one on a different boot. A handy thing to keep in mind, considering that frame is so solid that it have potential to easily outlive rest of the skate, which naturally wears faster (sorry plastic, you won’t beat metal!).
As for wheels, you are getting similarly great deal. New Undercover RAW are not exactly the same as regular Undercover wheels, seeing that they are made in China rather than in USA – but they are still superb wheels, because Powerslide used the same award winning urethane compound. In real applications, you won’t be able to tell much of a difference. These are one of the best stock wheels you’ll find in skates on the market right now. Wicked ABEC9 chrome steel bearings complete the package.
So there we have it – the first pro freeskate from Powerslide ever and the best Zoom edition yet. While original Zoom Pro was always a kind of lower grade option compared to Next, with only Zoom 100 Rental getting close to the regular Next models, the Zoom Pro Nick Lomax is a whole different deal. It easily matches the best versions of Next skates from quality standpoint. Great thing about these two hardboots by Powerslide is that they are complementary – they have different shell sizing split and different width and shape. For the first time, skaters who find Zoom to be a better fitting option for themselves do not have to opt for lower end parts like liners and wheels.
About manufacturer
Powerslide is one of industry’s leaders even though it is relatively young company – it has been founded in year 1994. The Germany based brand has entered the market at height of inline skating’s popularity, at the time when market was flooded with low quality skates which could be described as toys rather than sport equipment. From the very beginning, Powerslide had one goal: to break the perception of inline skating being a leisure activity for kids and to promote it as a sport for everyone. That’s not a surprise considering that company’s owner, Matthias Knoll, is a skater himself. As speedskating contender, he breathes this sport and his love for it has been fuelling Powerslide for over 25 years.
If we were to describe Powerslide in three words, these would be: quality, variety and innovation. From the very beginning of company’s existence, Germans have challenged industry’s giants and competed with them in field of quality. Nowadays they are in lead of the pack when it comes to technology: heatmoldable liners and boots, compressed carbon shells, revolutionary Trinity mounting – these things are relatively fresh and competition is yet to respond. Looking back, Powerslide was the first company to introduce carbon freestyle skate with integrated padding. They were the first company to introduce carbon based aggressive skate. 125mm wheels were introduced to speedskating thanks to them. The introduction of Kizer Advance frame and then Level 2 made a big impact and lead to rapid evolution of aggressive flat frames. Germans were the first company to make triskates a significant part of their offering, starting a new trend. Nowadays, Powerslide are the only company that makes real off-road skates (not to be confused with off-road rollerskis).
This pursuit of change and improvement is unique – no other company in this industry is having a boss willing to take even the craziest of ideas and concepts to production stage. Powerslide also have, without a shadow of doubt, the richest catalogue of products among all skating companies; covering even the most niche equipment made for freestyle slalom, downhill and inline alpine. They have full range of accessories and parts: helmets, protection pads, wheels, bearings, frames and so on. The company is also making rollerskates, providing recreational, roller derby and skatepark models and equipment. It can be safely said that if Powerslide is not making something skating related, chances of other companies having it in their offer are slim to none.
Powerslide have an impressive brand portfolio: MyFit liners, Wicked bearings, Reign hockey skates, USD aggressive skates, Kizer frames, Undercover wheels, Matter wheels, Gawds boots, wheels and softgoods, Prime wheels, Juice rollerskates wheels, Chaya rollerskates, Ennui protection and many others.
What makes Powerslide special are company’s people and supporters who create a community around it. Germans support and cooperate with skaters all around the globe. International Powerslide Team is composed of names every inline skating fan should be familiar with and believe us - there are far too many to list them here.
